I think the Jaiku boys disabled linebreaks due to abuse of the html-tags or smth like that. I hope they'll adjust their code so we'll be able to paragraph away again ;)
If you can do stuff like this.. then at the least having a formatting code for a line break should be entirely possible. I really miss those line breaks too.
Are the Jaiku boys going to be able to see this thread.. or do we have to take up pitchforks and march to the Google Campus? ;) (or post to the Jaiku channel maybe..)
actually Jaiku team is much aware of the problem. see @petteri's reply here: "Very annoying problem, but luckily this is on top of the TODO list. The guys were fixing another urgent, invisible one first."
@matiasm: Personally I wouldn't draw that conclusion, not based upon this change at least. To me it seems that the Jaiku team had no other choice than to quickly make changes because it had become obvious that one could introduce all kinds of weird things by being creative with the Jaiku formatting codes. At least that's the impression I got from the thread that uncovered the whole thing (Hi @RickMeasham et al! :)
afaik, there's no "huge amount of data lost". granted, they are taking a loooong time to restore posts before Dec 16, 2007 but the server only crashed once (the "first" time was more of a performance issue). Growing pains I say, I think the team is doing pretty "right" considering the circumstances. Twitter has been 100x worse in the short period of time I used it.
I'm sorry if I have created some kind of monster here @cybette. I sure didn't want to bring the FB petition craze into Jaiku... And I must admit that I did do some format testing myself the other day, if not as effectively as the ones performed by @RickMeasham & friends.
I also do understand that bringing the line breaks back will mean some serious decisions about how to handle passed threads (including the ones broken up by destruction testing).
But still. The thread might work as a nice little reminder.
oh no don't worry @Nikke, I'm all for this petition (+1 here! count my vote!) but as a software engineer myself i know how it is that when something wrong happens, everyone starts screaming but when things are going right (or when we are trying to fix things) the effort can go unseen. so as much as this thread is a reminder for the problem, my previous comments are a reminder of the good work that the Jaiku team has done so far :)
@cybette You have missed a great part of the Scandinivan feeling of brothe/sisterhood ;) Anywho, to go ON TOPIC - were there any security concerns allowing these tags?
